After openly questioning the 12 step programme at meetings I felt ostracized by other AA members which infuriated me. I feel AA gives people with alcohol problems a do or die ultimatum for a problem that has more than one solution. My recovery was done my own way and by my own will. Great post. Thanks.

Well put! I went through a 6 week residential treatment programme which had mandatory daily meetings. I maintained that the meetings were only effective depending on the level of your addiction and werent suitable for all addicts. My councellers insisted that my attitude to AA had to change and that if i didnt embrace the fellowship I was doomed to fail in recovery.

Oddly enough, I have great respect for AA, but I agree with the comments about declaring being recovered, I was insulted for saying I was, and shunned. In AA people love you when you still profess weakness, but shun you when you say you have recovered, a strange phenonomon. Glad that others found the same, as I thought it was just me. Humility is telling it like it is, up or down on that level and it's false, but most AA's have conditioned themselves to stay sick, what a shame.

do you have any satellite offices? Atlanta to be exact. I have never viewed my problem as a disease! rather a mix between chemical reation in the body and repetitious behavior. Going Monday to a therapist for the first time and I already have the sneaky suspicion that he/she will reccommend the AA 12-step program. How does one combat that without looking like a helpless alcoholic? Been doing research for 4-5 years on this and I think I'm a little educated on the subject.

I agree with all that you say but , alcohol has been a problem for me for a long time. I was off of alcohol for 3 years from September 2002 to October 2005 but succumbed from "social pressure" in ST.Eulalia Ibiza where alcohol is available all over the place. I really want to get off of it again, but fucking can't !!!!
