I'm quite sure he wrote this song for Kathleen. I've seen a lot of videos in which he whispers: "for Kathleen" before singing. As far as I know they are still together and have 3 children.

I Thought he was with Kathleen Brennan for years and years and they were still together and she was from Johnsville Illinois and that song was about her, but you may be right.
