GM was also making hybrid buses with high fuel economy before anyone else.A better question would be 'what happened to the Fuel Cell cars?' because this technology was truly new and ecological, not over 100 years old like the electric car.

GM knew 50% of electricity was generated w/ Coal. They also knew in 2000 that the batteries they used were too expensive. An EV1 is sitting at my alma mater.GM currently has more models which get over 30 mpg than any other company. You don't see it, because you don't look for them. The SUV was marketed to the public because the company made more money per unit. They were also great for comfort, modifications, etc. This created a consumer demand they were only meeting.

GM deserves no help from the Government. It was GM that killed the EV1. Instead of investing in the R&D of Electric & Hybrid cars, they dumped it and went with the HUMMER. Don't feel sorry for this evil company! If oil drops to $50.00 a barrel, trust me, they will dump all small cars development! This is a company that never thinks outside of the box and can't see beyond tomorrow. That is why the United States is so far behind in electric and hybrid cars development.
