Here in Chigago, one of our fine art stations used to play some of Duke's more classical oriented pieces on a Sunday afternoon show. He did think in a classical manor in his approach to music, but incorporated Jazz into his work. I am appreciating his work more as I get older.

"Love Duke and Benny, but the Count was KING!" Basie put emphasis on the rhythm in a way Ellington generally didn't (his guitarist and drummer weren't first-rate by swing standards). Ellington put emphasis on sounding semiclassical in a way Basie generally didn't. Goodman liked the Basie approach better but did some of each (Sauter's arrangements of instrumentals were Benny's more "Duke" side).

hey cool; as a pro jazz guitarist & student of jazz history, I must agree 100% with you. My Dad, also a jazz musician knew the Duke, & we got Xmas cards from him every yr......very beautiful ones with artistic prints.

I regret that I never saw Duke live. He would have been older, and toward the end of his career. Duke did a different style than Basie. His arrangements were much more intricate and there was a different emphasis with his rhythms section. They both were great artists. |
