I saw this today for the first time, in a dark movie theater. I've never had such a unique movie experience in my life. I was stunned by this film, and this scene in particular left me amazed and frightened by what the filmmaker was able to do.A really fantastic, and assuredly unforgettable experience.

BTW: 201o should be purged from the record..it's a piece of garbage without merit or reason.

i was 11 in 1968 when i saw the sneak preview at the Golden gate theater here in san Fran. everyone left the theater in shocked silence shaking their head, the poster out front held no clue to the depth of the film.,

Arthur and Stanley were going for realism, not flames & zooms out of rocket ships in the vacume of space. This movie 2001 is to star wars and star trek what the Pacfic Ocean is to my toilet. Ever read the Original Illiad and the Odyssey? Strat!

the book came out AFTER the movie was finished, started in the early 60s they cut nine minutes the early test screenings were unwatchable. The trip is meant to represent time travel back 9 million years. to the "Dawn of Man". Perhaps Dave was turned into God by the beings the "Monolith" represents these are metaphores for things we can't (yet)understand.
