My Atkins Diet Story

aka how one Iowa guy lost over 200 pounds and gained his life back. I can not say enough about how positively the Atkins Diet and low carb in general has been for me. I went from a 429 pound guy who could barely make it up a flight steps to a guy running half marathons and rejoining the National Guard. My health is fantastic, and my blood work (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart) could not be better.

Well 4 years later after bacon and red meat and veggies and cheese and a few marathons later, my doctor couldn't be more pleased. He is also a huge advocate of low carb and Atkins specifically, and I and my excellent just happened to reenforce his beliefs. Thanks for the congrats, and good luck to you.

Yes it's a low carb diet. But it's also high fat, high protein which is unhealthy according to the American Heart Association. and I'm no dietician by any means, I just know that from what I've heard any health official's opinion is that this diet is unhealthy. Maybe this diet could be healthy. But eating bacon, butter, red meat, etc..definitely isn't healthy. to each man his own, and imo, best way to lose weight = exercise. which is what you did. so i guess congrats.

As for Cancer treatment, my brother attends the Mayo Clinic right now for genetic cancer, and the doctor there recommended a low carb diet to him as well.

Oops repost your last comment if you want Michael, I hit remove instead of reply. As for the other groups, I don't doubt there are long held beliefs in each for mainstream thought. That said both Dr. Atkins and South Beach diet were cardiologist by trade. Atkins Diet challenges the norm and traditional belief systems. Check out the work of Dr. Phinney, Volek, Westman, et. all for healthy nature of low carb eating.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has for the first time voiced its support of low-carbohydrate diets for weight management of people with diabetes. The endorsement was part of the ADAs recently published 2008 Clinical Practice Recommendations, which are intended to guide diabetes health care providers.

You do realize if the fat is never turned into energy the person will never lose the weight, don't you? Ketosis has never been proven unhealthy for anyone other than patients with kidney damage.Yes the water weight argument... I lost 211 pounds or over 26 gallons of water. Sure.As for health officials, check again. Even the American Diabetes gives props to low carb diets now. Watch my latest cholesterol video or search google, and prove to yourself dietary fat does not equal cholesterol

ketosis is unhealthy. it puts stress on the liver to convert fat into energy. the body's preferred source of energy is glucose, a carbohydrate. also alot of the weight loss, is due to water weight. which causes dehydration of the body. which can lead to ketosis. all i know is every health official i've read their opinion on, not one of them has recommended this. Any diet that promotes the eating of red meat, butter, and fatty unhealthy foods like that...I'll pass. try the Zone Diet. :)

After 14 days of getting your eating under control and getting into ketosis. Here is how many vegetables you could eat and still be under 20 net grams:* 8 avocados, or * 64 spears of asparagus, or* 6 cups of cucumber, or* 44 cups of iceberg lettuce, or* 52 cups of spinach, or* 400 radishesOr additionally you can have higher carb vegetables like onions, tomatoes, or cups and cups broccoli and cauliflower. So again tell me this diet is unhealthy, or how much refined sugar does one need?

All my heart risk factors have dropped considerably since starting the diet. My health stats have improved since starting with nothing on blood work. As far as carbs being the enemy, I wonder if you actually understand the diet. As the diet is about controlling the carbs and your relationship to carbs, not eliminating them. As the diet progresses, you add more and more cups of veggies and fruits into the diet as your body can handle them. Carbs are not the enemy not knowing your limit is.
MichaelBallack91 (December 31, 1969 at 5:59 pm)
this diet is horrible for you. you probably just increased your chances of getting a heart attack, and/or stroke. all diets in which people claim "carbs are the enemy" is untrue. Yes you need to limit the amount of high-starchy foods, but not drastically. Try eating healthier carb sources like vegetables.
