I believe that there is no such thing as the greatest musician, but that there are those whom we deem the greatest. Whether it be Oistrakh or Heifetz for Violin, Rascher or Mule for the Saxophone, or Horowitz or Hamelin for the piano, all that matters is that they can play the music written for the instrument and do it in a masterful way. Anyone who can play Sarasate/Wieniawski for Violin, the etudes of Bozza for Saxophone, and the works of Alkan for piano must be one of the greatest.

Please be fair and objective! We tend to be bias just like a film star fan who's always saying that his idol is the best. I think these violin masters would just do all they could to perfect their skill and emotion rather than comparing who's the best. They all have their own style. We could only identify the differences among them comparatively, and we could also have our very personal perferences, but nobody could say who is the best in the area of music & arts. Who can draw the line?

Perlman is a maudlin violinist who plays worst as he gets older; Milstein is only good as a backup concert artist; Mutter is only a dime-a-dozen talent; Stern is only good at playing Mozart and fund raising; and nacho for Natchez.

Heifitz, Oistrakh, Perlman, Flesch, Natchez, Stern, Mutter, Milstein--the list goes on and on. Who is the greatest? Each and every one of them! When you are world class like these and many, many others like them it is impossible and very unfair to try to say: "This is the finest..." Best to glory in the sounds they make and not worry who is better. It ain't like there is a Michael Jordan of the violin...

Это у Ойстраха Сталин не велел Госконцерту деньги отбирать, чтобы он смог купить себе скрипку Страдивари?
