Originally, at Papal Mass, the subdeacon held on the paten a particle of a consecrated host from the Pope's previous Mass and, at the Masses in the parish churches of Rome, a particle sent from the Pope's Mass. This particle was placed in the chalice at the "Pax Domini si semper vobiscum." The ceremony showed the unity of all Masses as the making present of the unique sacrifice of Christ. In continuation of this practice the subdeacon now simply holds the paten until it is required.

I agree with you, Scotty. Titus 1: 9: he must have a firm grasp of the unchanging message of the tradition, so that he can be counted on both for giving encouragement in sound doctrine and for refuting those who argue against it.Long live the Catholic Faith preserved in the remnant.
