MediaTemple is definately the way to go. I'm currently with them, and have been once before as well. Their tech support staff is extremely knowledgeable, and not complete morons like alot of hosting providers out there.their client list pretty much says it all. and not to mention, the worlds top graphics designers and developers choose mediatemple. proven fact. :]

It is the same idea that an isp buys up 1000 gbits and supplies a thousand 20gig internetaccounts. The more users you have the more buffer for each user, so you can start buying less and less bandwidth per user.

Good comments Andrew. I'd add that many big hosts don't support key "search engine friendly" features like htaccess for mod-rewrite and 301 redirects which are key. It's well worth looking for "search engine friendly hosting" if traffic is important to your web site!

artichosting[dot]co[dot]uk follow similar principles to this. they only accept a limited number of customers, and have a range of packages, when a customer goes over their allocated bandwidth/storage for the package they have paid for they are either upgraded to the next package or are charged for the extra resources they use (decision is made by customer) obviously if the bills arn't paid for the extra resources within good time their account is temporarily suspended.

Interesting. Most wannabe net entrepreneurs can't afford dedicated hosting. Shared is financially viable in the early stages-testing the water. Surely a good web host will warn you if your bandwidth is going critical?
