Make that 13 and 27 as of Dec 18, 2008 :-) I'm sure Federer will at least equal Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam singles titles in 2009. He might even beat it.

And Sampras would have owned Borg on grass, hard court, and Aussie Open rebound ace, so I'd say that he was the better player.

due to racket technology, tennis was much slower back then which was why there were longer rallies

Some of these points are simply amazing. I wish we had more personailites in the game like Vitas (RIP).....and the pace of the game then allowed matches like this. Now the players are so great and so powerful, that yes, the points are amazing, but "texture" and touch players like Gerulaitis are extinct LOL

I think he does have something to prove. His standing in all-time history is extremely important to him and what he does from here on in will determine whether he's up there with the likes of Laver and Gonzales. Roger's peak play rivals anyone's, but what's missing, for now at least, is the longevity and this year has been a setback of sorts.

Alot to prove? Prove to who? He's never said he was the greateast player ever, and he doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. He's had a phenomenal career, and it's far from over. He may very well end up with 15, but he doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. The only person he may need to prove something to is himself.

Roger still has a lot to prove. Borg won 11 grand slam titles at a time when he played three a year. He also has a Davis Cup under his belt, unlike Roger. And suddenly a huge stumbling block with the mono in 2008 - I think he'll rebound, but this has silenced all who were so keen on calling him the greatest.

what's your point?
chapaev36 (December 31, 1969 at 5:59 pm)
He's 27 now and hasn't won a big tournament in months. |
