Here's a rare video of Jaco and Jeff Berlin at MI in 1985. The bass Jaco used was lent by Greg Wilson, a student there at the time. According to Greg, Jaco showed up for the performance without a bass... and the rest is history.

You know, if he wanted to be a guitarist, he would play the guitar.

Saying that your only rule is "It has to sound good" certainly doesn't detract from the notion that you're a narrow minded purist, and if you think most six string bass players don't, then wether or not I agree with you depends on what majority you're talking about. The majority of ALL six string bass players, in the world, are definitely not as good as the minority. I'll agree there. But the same goes for all bassists, generally.

>> a narrowminded purist. . .I'm not at all. I just have one rule:"It has to sound good"And most 6 string bass do not. And yes, most bass solos are awful.

SO conclusion: YOU are the a-hole for being a narrowminded purist. i personally have nth against purists who retain the traditions of a century old so proudly. but at least they keep an open mind when it comes to appreciating music and instruments and whatever related, while being a purist (only playing music the 'traditional' way or using the instrument the 'traditional' way). The real purists out there understand the non-pure stuff without kicking them aside as godawful terrible.

Maybe you are just being a purist. but like any other extremists, it doesnt serve to benefit the art form in any way besides retaining its 'traditional' elements in the ever-evolving realm it delves in. but then again, what defines 'traditional' exactly? Can you define 'jazz' in layman's term? i doubt so.

I am an acoustic upright player myself - 4 strings. but i dun regard the six string as a mutated bass or the sorts. i keep my mind open, very open, when it comes to music. That's how jazz, or any other form of music and/or art, developed and grew in the first place. If you were the first jazz player ever in the history of jazz, i doubt jazz would even progress that much to have a history to talk about.

stupid arguments. and extremist opinions about 6 strings, please do keep them to yourself. apparently you don't understand the 6 strings bass enough yet. the extra strings serve to extend the bassist's range to manage new genres such as, and especially, fusion. and the C string of the 6 strings bass doesnt even cross over to the guitar's range much. and to limit one instrument to doing just what it is 'meant to do' is like telling a housewife to stick to doing chores and nth else. zz.

the 6str, bass is a bass..not a guitar.anthony jackson invented it in 1970. who said that a bass guitar should be with 4 str. that's not an upright bass! cheers :)

>> Check this video to see a great 6-string bass player . .I looked at it, not really impressed. Nocomparision to Jeff's soloing. And I thinkhe's one of those "bass players" who really wants to be a guitarist. I really can't standmost, if not all, 6 string bass players.
