Muslim (Arabic: مسلم) is an adherent of the religion of Islam. The feminine form of 'Muslim' is Muslimah (Arabic: مسلمة). Literally, the word means "one who submits to God". The word "Muslim" is the participle of the same verb of which "Islam" is the infinitive. Muslims believe that there is only one God, translated in Arabic as Allah. Muslims believe that Islam existed long before Muhammad and that the religion had evolved with time from the time of Adam till the time of Muhammad, and was completed with the revelation of verse 3 of Surah Al-Maeda""This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion."The Qur'an describes many Biblical prophets and messengers as Muslim: Adam, Noah (Arabic: Nuh), Moses (Arabic: Musa) and Jesus (Arabic: Isa) and his apostles. The Qur'an states that these men were Muslims because they submitted to God, preached his message and upheld his values. Thus, in Surah 3:52 of the Qur'an, Jesus' disciples tell Jesus: "do thou bear witness that we are Muslims". Muslims pray five times a day; these five prayers are known as Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha. There is also a special Friday prayer called Jumu'ah.Most Muslims accept as a Muslim anyone who has publicly pronounced the Shahadah, which states, "There is none worthy of worship except God, and Muhammad is His Messenger." Currently, there are an estimated 1.4 billion Muslims, making it the second largest religion in the world.Islam (Arabic: الإسلام; al-'islām (help·info)) is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion originating with the teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a seventh century Arab religious and political figure. The word Islam means "submission", or the total surrender of oneself to God (Arabic: الله, Allāh). An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning "one who submits [to God]". The thing is that the people who are 'extremists' are actually following their holy text more faithfully than the moderates. Moderates ignore aspects of their faith, or are ignorant of aspects of their faith. I prefer moderates since they tend to include more secular morality and science. However, the moderate's position of fence sitting or having their cake and eating it too, it not a defensible or respectable position intellectually.

1) Yes, peace is embeded in the meaning of the word Islam but the main meaning means submission, surrender, obedience, sincerity and peace2) The consensus of scholars declare that the Nation of Islam is NOT part of Islam based on what they preach although the do share some secondary issues of similiarity3) The main message of all prophets is that there is no deity worthy of worship except the Creator, God (although what you mentioned is also true)

What happened in Beslan was sad but they did it as a revenge for CHECHENYA , unfortunately they used Islam name to gain some support from Muslims but that didn't work because we against this kind of inhuman acts. Our Prophet ( Muhammad PUH)said nobody kills children , women and elderly . If you Knew this before You would know that act wasn't Islamic.
