Ah, but the glory of Davis's music definitely does NOT depend on the patronage of some political point-scorer like Pete.Leadbelly was first 'discovered' and recorded by Alan Lomax, but Lomax did so out of his love of the art and his desire to preserve it. No whiff of politics.Pete's politics make me doubt his reasons for getting Davis on his show, and that gets in the way of my enjoyment of this clip. I love the music, but I don't like Pete getting a SHRED of credit from the association.

Do you think the fact that Rev Gary Davis' glorious music is able to live on forever and pass through our ears to this day is because Pete also saw the same incredibleness in Davis that we do. If it wasn't for Seeger we wouldn't be able to listen to this today. There is good in everyone.

The problem is with the presence and interference of the nasty polemicist, Red Pete.I came here to listen to Gary Davis, and want to see and hear NOTHING of Pete Seeger. He's not fit to shine Rev Davis's shoes who, by being a religious conservative, would have almost certainly disliked Pete's communist politics.

Well Pmishkin, When the person bringing us anything, be it Rev. Davis or John Hurt is a committed Communist like Ol Pete it is inevitable. I love these musicians and their music but there IS an elephant in the room, and some people will pay attention to the "elephant" behind the banjo.

It amazes me how people can listen to this uplifting piece by Rev. Gary Davis and still get bogged down in nasty polemics.

You've got to love inspirational gospel singer. I shook his hand at the Cambridge Folk Festival in '72 and I've played like him ever since. Thanks for this!

I feel compelled to paraphrase the Monster in 'Bride of Frankenstein': "Music good. Politics bad"

Oh dearest ar, you poor, poor, condescending insincere numbnut like your hero Pete the "cowardly commie". Your pity is not needed here. Save your pity for the billions who are enslaved by statist countries who dont have the freedom to express how they really feel. By the way, if you need help defending yourselves from whatever barbarians are at your gate, we'll help you, and when we save you all we'll ask is for a small plot of land for the hero's who made it possible for you to be free. |
