i don't quite believe it about the good ol' days. it definitely was better than today, and less vulgar, but i'm sure there were plenty of stars around without sigmnificant artistic talent, only good looks, some charisma, and a knack for public relations. it's just that they are forgotten over the years, whereas true talent prevails, creating the idealized view of that era. anyway, gene was a singular phenomenon (as were judy and fred). and there is some real talent today, too.
