not necessarily, on the flipside ''because'' could also be: ''inspite of the fact that'' or ''im stuck with you because'' or ''you think you own me because'' ... i think that it doesnt have to mean that its a good thing, that the rent is paid for them, by someone that they have no other reason to love, aside from them paying the rent. the hyphen could have a multitude of meanings

The saddest part is, "I love you - you pay my rent" is the cornerstone of a lot of relationships I know. What's sad about it is that that hyphen replaces the word "because".
