when the act of speeding up to the car in front of you, causes you to slow down (before you have to accelerate again), and you have a lower speed on average because of this accel/decel/accel--then you'll get a traffic jam. The problem is people not keeping the same distance with the cars in front of them--if everyone did, there would be no need to decelerate as quickly, because everyone'd have a cushion in front of them to leave room for speed variation.

its the drivers themselves causing traffic jams...a few years ago i was on my way to my moms and came across a line up of cars (single lane hiway) all moving but very slowly...after about an hours of steady in and out passing (even passed 2 cops) i get to the front...some fucking hippy in his pos vw van polluting more then the 4 vehicles behind him combined. immediatly he was flipped off and i continues on my way

yer but wat if the cars whent a bit faster than the 1 in front it is not a fact that the jam was created by nothing ... everything has a cause

No, that's what causes PEOPLE TO FLY THROUGH WINDSHIELDS.

some drivers drive closer to the middle and some drivers drive closer to the edge. there i just solved it. because those who drive closer to the middle is more likely to travel faster but not going faster if you know what i mean. they have the same speed but different angels.

precisely!

that would make it worsepeople see the gap, they go to fill it. then they slam on the brakes and have to stop again. that's what causes traffic jams.
