I actually am reading the books (I've read more of them than actually watched the anime XD), although I haven't got to where Emiri plays a larger role yet. I still feel like they chose Emiri over Kunikida and Taniguchi for the reason I posted in my post though.

No. That isn't what this is about.She actually becomes a bigger character in the later seasons. There's a book series, and if you read that you'd understand.

Grrr . . . this kinda reminds me of one of the aspects I hate about the anime industry. Girls are "cuter" and "more marketable" so they give a girl who appears for 3 minutes an image song/CD but not to 2 male supporting characters (Taniguchi & Kunikida).
