I once spent 3 months living in Calcutta(I am from England).Back in 1980 it was a real culture shock but I grew to love this city.I have seen the changes (mostly good).

Its the dirties city in the WORLD....almost 3/4th of the city is a slum....the hoogly river is once giant sewer..its brown...and filty..theress a stench everywhere u go....YUCK....they oughta tear the whole city down!!

As a native from Calcutta, yeah, it's a grimy, dirty city. Sure there are the right parts. But the poor parts are just..a dump. And I used to live in the slums with all those communist factions.For visitors, you might need some time to get used to the city.
