There was public outrage over Brandon Teena's murder/rape. For MTFs, like Gwen Araujo, her murder/rape was completely ignored by the public.

Brandon Teena's abusers/killers were given life in prison without parole.If they killed an MTF instead, like Gwen Araujo, they would be out in only months to attack another MTF.
