Hey dude why do you compare those 2 versions? I guess because they use the same melody. They are totally dfferent. I really love this folk one. The Animals were my boyhood and they are awesome in this. Nina Simone did also a great version in her album Nina at the Village Gate" in 1962. Please try it, it's on YouTube

Leadbelly didn't write it. It's a traditional song. People recorded it before Leadbelly.

This is a more traditional version. And yes the original was written about a girl. And to say this is rubbish is quite an ignorant thing to say.

this song comes from the 18th century originally, who knows who wrote it, who cares, nearly every version of it is amazing

No, the song's beena round for a couple hundred years, you know, before recordings could be made on anything besides pottery... and ususally by accident. |
